Wild kill

COMPILED BY R. KRITHIKA

The Amur leopard is on the edge of the cliff of extinction. A female leopard — only seven exist — was found dead in the Barsovy National Wildlife Refuge in Russia. The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) said that poachers had shot and beaten the animal. According to scientists, at least 100 leopards are needed to sustain the wild population and the killing of a young female capable of reproducing will only worsen the already precarious situation. The discovery of the killing was made just two days after a survey report announced that there were only between 25 and 34 leopards in the wild.
