It was just about being precise and swift. And the youngsters did exactly that to emerge victorious at the State Rapid chess tournament.
Ramnath Bhuvanesh and Bharathi in the under-14 category, and Bharath and Saranya in the under-12 section, won titles at the competition organised by the Tiruvarur District Chess Association, which concluded at Dharani Matriculation School, Mannargudi, recently. The Rapid chess event a form of chess in which each player is allotted 30 minutes per round saw the participation of more than 150 players from various districts. "In rapid chess most of the rounds produce results, as the participants play an attacking game. Such positive approach helps them a lot while competing in general chess tournaments," says R. Anantharam, an international arbiter.
Commendable progress
The progress of youngsters in the districts has been commendable in recent times, thanks to the efforts taken by the Tamil Nadu State Chess Association (TNSCA) to promote the game in other centres. "TNSCA has been arranging for various training programmes, in which International Masters conduct a coaching camp for the youngsters in the districts. Also, the regular tournaments conducted by the district associations keep the players busy," Anantharam adds.
At the valedictory function, the correspondent of Dharani Matriculation School, S. Kamaraj, gave away the prizes in the presence of the president of Tiruvarur District Chess Association, N. Santhakumar, and secretary, R.K. Balagunasekaran.
