PAROMITA PAIN

Learn more about Chennai the fun way. The tour bus takes a leisurely ride through the city beginning with the Marina Beach.

INSIDE THE FORT MUSEUM: A historical tour of the city's past.

Living in Chennai can be fun. To discover more about exciting hotspots that aren't your usual cool hangouts, go on a tour of the city with the Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation.

The itinerary may, at first glance, seem rather staid. But how often have you visited the Fort Museum?

Have you really explored the tall buildings that house thrilling stuff from the past?

Usually the Marina Beach is the first on the list followed by the Fort Museum.

It's amusing to listen to the guide. You may not agree with all that he says since most of the time its so radically different from what you have read, but it's fun all the same.

The Kapaleeshwar Temple, one of the oldest temples in Chennai, is a lovely place to visit on a lazy Sunday morning.

If the deities and architecture don't interest you, then the huge temple pond with its big hungry fish that are almost tame enough to eat from your hand can be quite a treat.

Look at the surrounding areas from the tank steps — everything looks so far away!

Reptiles too

The Snake Park at Guindy isn't what you would normally visit on a summer day. But the sun makes sure that the snakes are awake and you can see them in all their glory.

The crocs soaking in their pools may make you want to take a quick dip but you know better!

The last stop is the Egmore Museum where the bronze gallery is the main highlight. Located way behind the main buildings, this gallery may often be missed out on the usual outings. Air-conditioned with aesthetic lighting, it showcases Indian bronze art at its best.

There are morning and evening trips. Don't forget your water bottle (a large one) and sun hat if on the morning one. At Rs. 120 per head, it's a great way to know your city better.
