There are many ways to show her that you care

SANGEETHA DEVI K.

Little gestures, rather than gifts, can make mom feel special.

SPECIAL MOMENTS: Every day a Mother's Day

Hyderabad

Mother's Day has come calling again. Falling on the second Sunday of May each year, the day has been growing in popularity in India as it has in the West. If the mere mention of the day is sending you into a tizzy and you're wondering what to gift mom, stop and do a rethink. There's more to Mother's Day than the commercialisation that's crept in.

Gift of love

You might have read a number of times that celebrating Mother's Day in spirit is more important than showering her with materialistic gifts.

It's not bad to remind yourself of the thought once again and perhaps even encourage your friends to do so.

The day falling during the summer vacation is a bonus since you can take all the time out and plan to make it special.

Make the day special by making a meal, a dessert or just a snack. Surprise her by making a bowl of baked vegetable as an accompaniment to a meal, vegetable grilled sandwich, bhel puri or desserts like caramel custard.

The new-age moms tend to be disciplinarians but have managed to step out of stereotypes and be more of a friend.

Discuss with your sibling about her likes and dislikes and take her for a walk/movie or rent a DVD and enjoy watching a movie at home. If you have a working mom who's trying to balance home and work, spruce up her car or her table this Sunday.

Leave a bunch of flowers (preferably red or pink carnations since they are associated with Mother's Day) and a card carrying a personal message. It doesn't matter even if you have overlooked a few mistakes despite repeated readings.

The mere fact that it was written by you will bowl her over. Involve dad in Mother's Day celebrations as well. As the day comes to a close, tell yourself that you will make mom feel special throughout the year. Disagreements and squabbles can crop up time and again but make an effort to follow her guidelines. That's the best gift you can give her.
