Celebrating the birth of the turtle

PAROMITA PAIN

Interesting information about the Olive Ridley told through spectacular pictures.

For environmentalist and documentary filmmaker Shekhar Dattatri, the most exciting film he has ever shot is the mass nesting and hatching of the Olive Ridey sea turtles on a remote beach in Orissa. The Olive Ridley is often in the news and you may ha ve heard of it. Thousands die every year thanks to human thoughtlessness. Their spectacular “aribada” or arrival happens every year and it’s a sight to see. Shekhar Dattari’s Riddle of the Ridley is an album of this celebration of turtle birth and life. Some truly amazing photos make this book a collectors edition. Since most of the turtle’s journey is told through pictures even the very young can enjoy the book. An adult Ridley can grow to enormous proportions while the baby ones can comfortably be held in your hand. These differences are well illustrated by putting the two pictures together explaining the differences at a glance.

The riddles about the Olive are also highlighted. They are fascinating creatures who come back to the same beach year after year. Isn’t it a wonder that they don’t swim away somewhere else? As the book says, while a lot isn’t known about these gentle sea giants, scientists are working to discover more.

Did you know that turtles could travel distances of over 1,500 miles in a month?
