Green days

RAJESWARI NAMAGIRI

Watch out for these environmentally significant days.

World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development: May 21

This day aims to raise public awareness of the wealth of cultural diversity and, in particular to enco

urage, knowledge of the value of cultural diversity and to promote “the fruitful diversity of the cultures”.

Activity

Food and Culture

The food we eat and the way it is cooked reflects our culture. Think of all the different dishes that are made out of rice at your home. How is rice cooked daily? On special occasions? During different seasons? When someone is sick? Make a list and compare it with that of your friends.

International Day for Biological Diversity: May 22

This day aims to increase understanding and awareness of biodiversity issues. International Day for Biological Diversity is an occasion to reflect on our responsibility to safeguard this precious heritage for future generations.

The focus of this day for this year is Biodiversity and Climate Change.

Activity

Look around; choose your favourite animal or plant and imagine how it would be affected if there was less or more of any one or all of these — water, rain, temperature, food/prey, sunlight. Climate change will impact all of these. Share the write up with your friends. Or send it to the local newspaper.

World No Tobacco Day:

May 31

The Member States of the World Health Organisation (WHO) designated World No Tobacco Day in 1987 to draw global attention to the preventable death and disease caused by tobacco. The theme for this year is Smoke-free Environment.

Activity

Use this opportunity to inform friends and family that smoking is harmful to both smokers and non-smokers.

At home, protest if elders and visitors smoke indoors. Paint signboards insisting on Smoke-free Environment and put them up at prominent places in the community and in the school. A smoke-free environment is your Right. Demand a smoke-free environment.
