Cast a spell

PAROMITA PAIN

This seems easy. Watch television and learn to spell like a pro!

The best ways to spell need not always include swallowing the dictionary. There are simpler methods like watching television for example. “Cast a spell”, the latest offering from the music channel SS Music is all about spelling. A verbal spelling competition, where participants have to spell a given word — it showcases the skills of school students in the city who can spell like wizards, earn themselves points and win rich prizes. “What are words,&# 8221; asks Anuradha Anant, the compere and conceiver of the show, as the screen bursts into a riot of colour to pulsating drum beats. Participating in the show is fun and contestants say the skill lies in being able to keep your cool and concentrate.

Interesting

Given a maximum of three minutes, various words are flung at the contestants who have to spell them and are graded accordingly. Keeping calm and spelling without writing anything down, visualising the words in the glare of the spotlight can be tough.

The show is well formatted and can be very exciting for the audience, who of course, can’t yell out spellings or encouragement. The words may be simple or difficult, depending on luck and while the simple ones are easy to negotiate it’s the difficult ones that can be real tongue twisters. Try spelling “ecumenicalism”!

Shraddha who emerged the winner confessed to feeling nervous. The participants had many tips for those yet to participate. The most important ones were to break up the word while spelling it, never hurry and taking a second before starting to spell.

While the harsh studio lights can feel hot most of the students felt that in the spirit of the game such discomforts were minor. Aired every Sunday, SS Music is inviting city schools to register.
