Visiting the workplace of mom and dad

By getting to know the nature of work your parents do, may help you understand them better.

Let me see for myself: Off with mom

Parents don the super human avatar today juggling home and office. The much hyped work-life balance has been there for ages before it became a fashionable statement now. How would you then talk about the piping hot idlis that amma makes every morning and packs a sumptuous tiffin with a candy for school, ensures your uniform is in order and your books covered for the next academic year? Or for that matter, those vacations that dad plans every summer for you and the whole fa mily, ensures you catch up on Spiderman 3, Mr Bean’s Holiday or any other movie of the season at the multiplex, with popcorn and cola? Or for their active involvement in your sports day and examinations and knowing your curriculum by rote? And, how much do you know about your parents work or workplace?

Find out

We are not talking about SOHO (Small Office Home Office) here and not even professions? So, your father is a cardiologist or mother is a copywriter. So, what exactly does their work entail? Software engineer can mean a whole lot on the platter for the portfolio and dietician can be a lot more than designing weight loss programmes.

With several multi national companies in the country today organising special days for the children to visit the parents’ work place, it would be a nice idea to have a peep at the new age chic office spaces, not forgetting the high tech element around. Look at a day, invariably a hectic one, in your mom’s or dad’s life at work. Calls to attend, meetings, deadlines, stress, management, more deadlines and phew, that is just the tip of the ice berg.

New terminologies such as six sigma, beta testing, mergers and acquisitions and more that your parents never spoke at home that they talk here, will only make you understand how they have managed to simplify life back home for you to be a part of the communication.

Do’s and don’ts

When at the office campus, maintain silence, do be careful with the electronic gadgets lest you have any untoward accident and keep your eyes and ears open to know more about their professional realm.

Back home get to know more about their work.

Read up. May be you would like to follow their vocation for a career later.

And yes, the next time don’t ever ask them, “so what do you do, again?” They are thorough professionals apart from being amazing set of parents for one.

A high five to that.
