Tucking in: At the ice cream competition

Temperature in peninsular India is giving the young and old alike a run for their money even as the southwest monsoon is playing hide and seek.

The heat wave is giving people all the more reason to head for the refrigerators and pull out those yummy ice creams and cool drinks. People not having a refrigerator do not mind heading for the nearest ice-cream parlour in a bid to beat the heat.

While a visit to the ice-cream parlour can leave parents poorer by a few hundred rupees these days, they had no reason to complain when children went gaga over ice creams at Kadri Park here recently. In fact, parents were more than keen to encourage children to eat ice creams and lots of them. Surprised? None of the parents on hand had won any lottery or become ‘malamal’ overnight! Yet they were as enthusiastic as their children!

The sole reason for their unbridled enthusiasm in egging the children on, was the ‘JC Dinky Ice-Cream Eating competition’ organized by the Junior Chamber International Mangalore. The competitors, 250 in all, were classified into junior and senior category based on their age. While children in the age group of five to nine years were in the junior category, those in the age group of nine to 12 years were in the senior category.

Hrishikesh Kamath, president of JCI, Mangalore says the competition now into its 14th year is an event, which children in and around Mangalore look forward the most.

The competition has gained in popularity during the past 13 years and the increasing response is an indicator to this fact. It is our endeavour to create a platform for the children to display their talent, for it takes some doing to eat ice creams in double quick time, he says.

In the end, it was Saurabh, Suhas and Akhil who emerged the top three winners in the junior category. Kasuhal, Manish and Samradh took home the honours in the senior category.

The enthusiasm displayed by children in scything through the ice-creams only echoed what Mr. Kamath said, “We need to motivate the children to excel and results are there for all to see.” Certainly a cool competition, which doused a lot of heat!
