The three-day camp organised by the Jawahar Balajana Vedi saw the participation of children from various parts of the State.

Common goal: Shaping up a new generation.
Interaction with film and political personalities, kite flying, magic shows, drawing and origami classes were the highlights of “Kilikkuttom” (Gathering of birds), a three-day State-level camp for children organised by the Jawahar Balajana Vedi at Kovalam.
Over 100 children and their parents from various parts of the State attended the camp.
K. Rajmohan, a Std. XII student at Cherayi Sahodaran Memorial School, Ernakulam, was elected as the State president of Balajanavedi at the camp.
Jawahar Balajana Vedi, the recently launched children’s wing of the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee, is the brainchild of K.P.C.C. executive and its president Ramesh Chennithala.
Though conceived of by a political party, the organisation promises to be more than just a political unit. “This is not a platform for recruiting members for the party,” said Hari Krishnan, State-Coordinator Balajana Vedi.
“Our aim is to create awareness about the country’s struggle for independence and the role played by national leaders, including Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru and Subhas Chandra Bose to a generation that has forgotten its roots.”
Student team
The functioning of Balajana Vedis constituted at ward, mandalam and constituency level is controlled by a State committee comprising 16 students selected from various districts.
Each Balajanavedi group consists of 15 to 30 students in the age group of 10-17 years. Plans are afoot to prepare a curriculum complete with examinations for the students. “The idea is to generate an interest in reading and gathering information beyond their academic syllabus,” said Krishnan. The Balajana Vedis will conduct training camps, social service activities and study classes as part of its programme.
“The goal is to shape up a generation based on the value system advocated by great leaders and social reformers of the past. More than politics, the organisation will focus on promoting value-based thoughts, be it spiritual or academic. We expect to have a membership of three lakh children in three years,” he said.
The general secretary of K.P.C.C., M.K. Raghavan, is in charge of the organisation. G.V. Hari is the chairman of the coordination committee.
Leader of Opposition Oommen Chandy inaugurated the State-level activities of Balajanavedi, while film director Rajeevnath inaugurated the camp. The K.P.C.C. president who delivered the key-note address on the occasion urged the State Government to accord priority to children’s health and education. Stringent measures should also be adopted to curb child labour in the State, he added.
The office of Balajana Vedi functions at Indira Bhavan in Sasthamangalam.
