A school that stood the test of time: St. Ann’s School
St Ann’s School, where thousands of girls had their education, now stands to lose a part of it’s majestic façade. Memories of days and years, pranks played and hours spent kneeling on the floor are the topic of discussion amongst all Annites. The front portion of the school overlooking S.P. Road will be lost to road widening, and with it, an important part of the school will be lost. The paved entrance, till the school hall and it’s podium that made
a spokesperson, poetess and debater out of many will be part of the road widening. The huge square gates that are used as the entrance to the S.S.C section of the school, the smaller arch of the I.C.S.E side coupled with it’s imposing grey exterior, made outsiders jokingly refer to the school at ‘the jail.’
Memories of sitting in the church compound and telling each other ghost stories before the annual school picnic, the painful kneeling on the school field, running helter skelter to polish those sports shoes with borrowed shoe polish and the endless wait for sports day are just some instances that make an Annite nostalgic.
The school is attached to the St Mary’s Church that was built in 1850. The midday church bells chiming are used to time the daily lunch break.(much to the relief of many students). Thankfully, the church is considered a heritage structure and is spared of the road widening
Staying connected
Students of the school are actively involved in keeping in touch with each other by forming alumni groups, communities and forums on the internet. Two active forums are : annsalumni_icse@yahoogroups.com that is currently encouraging all ex-students to update their profile. ‘The St Anns High School Secunderabad’ community on Orkut alumni members find each other and ex-students put up fun surveys like ‘favourite school activity,’ ‘funniest teacher,’ ‘Best house’ and the like. The school’s official web site is
http://www.stanns-secunderabad.com
Though part of the school is being demolished, the memories are so vivid that they are literally engrained in many of us and will remain a part of our lives, forever.
