The World Environment Day on June 5 is always special for the Regional Science Centre of the Andhra Pradesh Council for Science and Technology (APCOST) at Bhavanipuram in Vijayawada. Having turned two on this year’s World Environment Day, the centre lined up a string of activities for implementation in the days to come.
Centre in-charge Ch. Hemanth Kumar said various competitions, seminars and demonstrations were to be hosted. In coordination with other Government organisations, like the Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) and the Andhra Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation (APTDC), it organised study tours for children in social welfare hostels. He said that the centre had chalked out plans to nurture its surroundings, besides creating an eco-friendly ambience.
The second phase of the consignment of exhibits, estimated to cost Rs. 40 lakhs, would arrive at the centre very soon and the upgradation was being done in coordination with the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan. The centre also had plans to rope in resource persons.
While the drive is primarily aimed at promoting local talent, the centre welcomes children from any background and region. Inauguration of EDUSAT terminal with the support of Vigyan Prasar, an autonomous organisation under the Department of Science and Technology, on February 2 this year was a milestone.
The centre intends to focus on involving students, teachers, coordinators, science communicators, academicians, administrators and non-governmental organisations in the activities it proposes to take up in future.
