PAROMITA PAIN

An attempt to record a history of how the computer came to be.

Most of us either have computers at school or at home. Men Who Built Computer — from Calculating Clock to Supercomputer attempts to record a history of how the computer came to be. Going back many years to the time when Wilhelm Schickard invented the calculating clock that enabled the first long calculations necessary in astronomy to Seymour Cray and the supercomputer, the book is an interesting chronology of the advent of the computer. The languag e is simple and easy to understand though not quite appealing. While the facts shown are interesting, the style of presentation is a tad boring and doesn’t really hold attention for too long. Pages and pages of facts with little or no illustration can get tedious after a while. Besides while the title indicates that the book is about the men who researched the device, it could have dwelt on the role that women too played in its evolution. Eva Gardner was among the first women to be included in the research team of Charles Babbage and a mention of their contribution could have gone a long way in providing a holistic picture.
