Little archer, big dreams

J. R. SHRIDHARAN

Strength and intense concentration are the keys to becoming good archers.

Little archer: Dhiroj

After the game of chess caught on in the 90s, the city of Vijayawada is witnessing yet another one. The sport of archery is gaining popularity among youngsters in a big manner following the stupendous show by the senior archers like Ch. Lenin, Mandava Rishitha and Jignash in the national and international competitions. Among the 32-odd archers training at the Volga Archery Academy, the youngest of them – six year old Dhiroj is the darling of both the fellow archers a nd administrators for he demonstrates loads of dedication and commitment. The Std. I student from Mary Gold Public School at Krishna Lanka hooked to archery thanks to his brief stay at Sikkim, where his father Sharan was posted. “Dhiroj’s father inspired Dhiroj to take up archery and this lad is certainly a champion-material. He enrolled into the academy last year and he is showing overwhelming results in the competitions,” opines Volga Archery Academy, chairman Cherukuri Satyanarayana.

Wooden bow

Carrying the recurve bow, weighing around 20 pounds, Dhiroj is a picture of concentration as he releases the arrow towards the target. “We made him train with traditional wooden Indian bow primarily to make him feel comfortable. We are training him for the under-12 national,” Mr. Satyanarayana added.

Dhiroj practises both morning and evenings at the Indira Gandhi Municipal Stadium at MG Road under the watchful eyes of the seniors. International archer Lenin, who was selected for the Indian team to take part in the 44th World championship at Leipzig, Germany, is Dhiroj’s coach. “We also have Chakradhar Reddy, a Std. II student. We are planning to give them intensive coaching apart from physical fitness regime, to strengthen their arms and shoulders, for they need strength to release arrows at regular intervals. Strength is the key as the little archers need to pull the mechanised bow strings consistently,” Lenin said.
