Perfect holiday place

NITANT VARTAKAVI

Besides the fantastic beaches and the gentle sea ideal for swimming, there are many places of interest around Diu.

Picturesque: The Diu coastline.

With its pristine beaches, the tiny island of Diu off the coast of Gujarat is a perfect place for a relaxing holiday. Diu was the first landing point of the Parsis when they fled Persia. It was a Portuguese colony earlier and though it is now governed as a Union Territory, much of its old charm still exists. The town is quiet and the wide roads are almost always empty.

Landmarks

Diu’s beaches are fantastic. The sea is very gentle here and the sand is soft and remarkably clean. The best of all is the Nagoa beach. This beach is a perfect semi-circle and is an ideal spot for swimming or to spend a lazy afternoon lying on the soft sands in the shade of the palm trees.

These Hoka palm trees (Hyphoena indica) are the only branched palms in India. These palms bear red-coloured fruit that tastes like sugarcane.

A majestic fort stands towering over the little island. Built by the Portuguese, this architectural marvel is a must-see. This fort was built of limestone and rock and was heavily guarded by numerous cannons concealed cunningly in its massive ramparts.

The breathtaking view from the fort alone justifies a visit to Diu.

Another tourist spot is the INS Kukri Memorial — a tribute to the brave martyrs aboard the INS Kukri who sacrificed their lives for their country during the 1971 Indo-Pak war.

The Gangeshwar temple, another tourist attraction, lies a short distance away. This cave temple is on the shore

Other places of interest are the church of St. Francis and St. Paul.
