Fun in the rain is wonderful

M. RAGHURAM

The rains don’t mean you have to stay dry and bored indoors.

Wet, wet monsoon: Frolicking in a pool of rainwater.

It is during the monsoon that the land is at its greenest best. There might not be full stream of outdoor activities in the school due to rains, but the outdoors are great in the monsoons and one has to venture out to make the most of it while it rains.

There are many outdoor activities that children could take part in even during the rain. A trek, a game of football, even a swim in safe swimming pools or even monsoon tourism packages can be indulged in if the parents are willing. There is always apprehension in the minds of elders that children might catch a cold but that wears off quickly with some doses from the local doctor. The experiences of playing in the rain are unforgettable.

Lots to do

A trek with experienced trekking guides in a group in a forest area can be a fulfilling experience. There is no need to get drenched as there are rubber wear that can cover the entire body and gum boots with lining of felt clothing inside that keep the feet dry.

Monsoon is the time when new life begins and just as shown on Discovery or National Geographic Channels – plants and insects are the ones to watch.

Those small rivulets and brooks that carry sparkling water running through the sidelines of the forest path are often full of fish, crabs and sometimes turtles and snakes too. Outdoor sport can be fun in the rains provided you are ready to get wet and dirty.

Any game that could be played in sunny days can be played in the monsoon also. Football and hockey are the most preferred ones and rubber ball cricket can be played too.

The slush, the falling rain and little bruises on the elbow followed by a little sneezing and perhaps a cold are all go into making a tough boy or a tough girl.

The competition batches in any swimming pools don’t stop swimming just because it is raining outside.

It is even more fun to swim in the downpour. The millions of drops in contact with the water in the pool creates a wonderful effect.
