RENUKA VIJAY KUMAR

Manogna is the winner of the National Bal Shree Honour.

Little artist: Manogna

She’s only 10 years old, yet had a firm grasp over clay modelling, 3-D modelling, painting in oil pastels, water colours, poster colours, collage and papier mache. She’s also the winner of the National Bal Shree Honour 2006, which was awarded to her last month by the President of India, Dr. A.P.J Abdul Kalam.

The award included a citation, a memento and a set of books from the Bal Bhavan but what the little girl holds close to her heart is the photograph of her receiving the award from the President.

The process leading up to the final round was a three step process. First children from each centre and city were selected and then sent to the regional round. The South zone was split into two zones. Five days of intense competition in New Delhi included rounds of wall painting, collage making, drawing and paintings to finally reveal winners in different fields. Manogna says that some of the topics were very abstract and difficult. One such topic was “Birds birthday party.”

About themselves

They had to fill up a brief about themselves for the president and seeing Manogna’s profile that explained her interest in robotics and artificial intelligence, Dr. A.P.J Abdul Kalam spoke to her, encouraging her to pursue her interests in this field.

Manogna learnt a few tips from students of the Telugu University in clay modelling and 3-dimensional modelling.

From classical vocal singing to folk dance to learning the abacus, Manogna enjoys doing things that keep her mentally active.

For more information about the activities of the National Bal Bhavan, contact your regional Bal Bhavan office or the head office based in New Delhi.
