Frozen flavours: "DeLuca’s Gelato Italiano"

There are ice creams and ice creams. The delicious treats mean much more than the universal choco-bars or scoops in varied flavours – vanilla, pista, strawberry, chocolate, butterscotch and caramel. Choosing your flavour from the cold freezer at your nearest department store can be quite a task. Fruit-based ice creams – with pieces of custard apple, chickoo and mango – compete with pro-biotic wellness ice creams that come with and without sugar. There are innovative flavours like coffee and cappuccino as well.

Great gelato

But what takes the experience of indulging in ice creams special are the international recipes that are entering the Indian market, through dedicated outlets in the city. How about sampling the Italian frozen dessert, gelato, the next time you drive down Necklace Road? Or have you considered partaking in making the ice cream of your choice on a cold granite slab? Gelato, in Italian, denotes frozen. These ice creams are frozen and then whipped to remove crystals that are formed. Generally prepared like traditional ice creams with milk and sugar, gelatos also rely heavily on the use of fruits (cherries, strawberries, raspberries and even plums), nutty flavours (walnuts, peanuts, hazelnuts) or crumbled cookies. Gelatos that are made without diary products are called sorbets. A popular dessert in Europe, gelatos then found their way into Asian countries. The more new variants of gelatos see the use of mint, lemon and tiramisu flavours. Scoop up your gelatos in cups or savour them on cones, as you like them.

If gorging on ice creams is fun, try making your own ice cream. We don’t mean making it from scratch, but just mixing the flavours and garnishing that suits your palate. Try making it on a cold granite slab and it can add to the fun element. Custom-made ice creams on a cold granite slab caught the fancy of ice cream lovers across U.S. after the ice cream chain Cold Stone Creamery. Customers could walk in, choose the right flavours of ice creams, mix them with seasonal fruits, nuts and even add-ons like peanut butter and dark chocolate shavings.

The concept then caught on to ice cream chains as well. Now, the new crop of ice cream joints in Hyderabad let customers prepare their delicacy on a cold slab.
