The musical: Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.
The Harry Potter (HP) fever continues unabated. Bookstores are still to remove the owls and other HP paraphernalia put up to welcome the final edition and hot debates about its merits and demerits haven’t yet run out of steam. In such an atmosphere it does make sense to stage a version of the first book that started it all. Landing Stage, the youth wing of the city theatre group, Masquerade, added that extra zing to the idea of the The Philosopher’
;s Stone and made it a musical.
Effective drama
So did it work or were memory charms needed? Adding music to something as popular as this book certainly isn’t easy and it is to the credit of the director (Aruna Ganeshram) and the scriptwriter (Manasi Subramanium) that they managed to create a concoction of events and music that rocked, for the most part at least. The sorting hat ceremony was one of them. Energetic and vibrant this scene set the pace of the rest of the play with its rousing number and super movements. The scene where quidditch was explained to Harry was tedious, especially to an audience that know the rules, and could have been edited. A trifle too long , a shorter version would have sent the audience home grinning widely.
