Enchanting: A view of the woods.
The Black Forest certainly takes the cake, though its not the confectionery that is being mentioned here but the Schwarzwald in Germany, that massive expanse of evergreens responsible for giving it a ‘dark’ look whereby it takes its name.
One of the most enchanting places in Europe, the Black Forest lays claim to millions of conifers that grow abundantly on the surrounding hills and mountains as well.
Starting from the Swiss frontier, these tall trees sweep northwards east of the Rhine. With verdant valleys, undulating meadows, charming towns and large farms in between, it gives the entire countryside a lush and romantic look.
Interesting facets
Traditions are vibrantly alive with colourful local dresses being worn on holidays and special festivals. Bygone days are not forgotten either as several unique and interesting facets of rural life are exhibited in an open air museum.
Lovely resorts dot the region, with waterfalls springing surprises. Cycling or driving through is a cathartic experience, while dozens of miles of well maintained paths and forest floor softened by underbrush make walking a supreme pleasure.
With its vast area of stunning natural beauty, the Black Forest is picturesque beyond imagination and leads one to believe all is not lost yet, that there are still pockets of paradise left on our planet.
