My country in 2017

No corruption, no pollution, no child labour...

CH. NIKITHA, V A, The Mother's Integral School, Hyderabad

India must be released from the clutches of illiteracy. India must be free from child labour. No discrimination should take place on the ground of caste and creed, religion and region, rich and poor. Education will be the right of every child. No death will occur by starvation. Cities and villages are free from curfews and arsons. No visa or passport should be needed to visit our neighbouring countries like Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka etc. Our neighbours could also visit us in the same way.

MALVIKA SHARAD, VII A, St. Mary's School,Mirzapur (U.P.)

My expectation for India in the next decade is to see it as a country free of social evils and poverty, inhabited by educated citizens who understand the concept of unity and do not get easily influenced by outside forces.

SAAGARIKA TANDON, VII A, Rajmata Krishna Kumari Girls Public School, Jodhpur

The divide between rural and urban should be bridged. Unorganized sectors should be protected by social schemes. Our educational syllabus should be employmentoriented. Legal reforms need government attention. Reverse brain drain and encourage young entrepreneurs. Our public transport system should be fast and comfortable. E-governance should be encouraged.

Economic inequalities would be done away with, break down of UAE law and order would be a thing of the past. No one would suffer from hunger pangs and every citizen would be literate. Health would take top priority and epidemics would be confined to the pages of history. Diseases resulting from malnutrition would not exist. There would be no power shortage.

P. SUSHMA, VI B, Ratnam School, Nellore

India will be a super power. Poverty will have been eardicated by then. She might out shine all the other nations in social and cultural fields too. She might give birth to many sportsmen and athletes. In short, she might achieve the impossible. This is not just a dream, but a vision which will come true if we put in the best of our efforts.

NISSIN ANN MATHEW, St. Thomas English H.S., Gudalur, The Nilgiris

My people and I should be honest, loyal, smart, true, hardworking and "do our best" in everything we do for our country and leave for "God to do the rest."

States will not quarrel over sharing river water. There would be no one below the poverty line and India will have 100 per cent literacy. More IT parks will be developed. There will be no community based reservations. All schools and colleges will be eco-friendly. India's space programme will reach unbelievable heights.

G. SARATH KUMAR, IX I, Zion M.H.S.S., Selaiyur, Chennai

India has 1.2 billion people. We are very fortunate to have so many people because together we can work hard to build an exemplary, powerful and developed nation. My dream for India is a country with clean roads and purified water. My hope for India is that every poor person is able to get a good education. We can do this because 50 per cent of Indians are below 25. With this collective energy, we can solve our problems.

MANDIRA RAJAN, Grade V, American International School, Chennai

Poverty should be eradicated and everyone should be given a free education. We would have good infrastructure - good roads, clean public toilets, efficient public transport, safe public places, proper police service and safety above all else.

N. SWATHI, IX A, Our Own English H.S., Abu Dhabi,

Women can be safe on any street, night or day. We would not have to run around getting community or caste certificates, because there would be no discrimination or reservation. Equality in the true sense would have been achieved. Preventive health care and education would have been given better priority. There would be a greater awareness of civic sense and hygiene. India would be on the pinnacle of power where technology and agriculture are concerned. Our ecosystem would be protected. Modern India would have retained its culture. And Indians will be appreciated the world over.

ALAMELU SATISH, VII, Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Kuwait

I expect my country to spread love, life and laughter. Peace may flow like a river in my country. I want my countrymen to help children in need and the elders. Elders should become our role models and children the future leaders. The bond of unity and integrity should bind the country together in its 60 th year.

YATI RAI, I B, Amity International School, New Delhi
