It is important to choose a career that you would love.

Lately, children either enter the engineering or medical stream . They would willingly go through a rigorous coaching that prepares them for the “entrance examination” to these coveted professional courses. Every street has a private coaching centre which caters to the area students wanting to appear for the entrance test at the end of two years. And most of these centres have what we call an integrated course which allows the students to pursue the stipulated two-year Intermediate (Plus2) along with the coaching. In all, the boys and girls are made to plough into two sets of books for two sets of examinations for two years without a break. At the end of it, if they can make it to the professional college, they are made to feel that their life has been made. Parental pressure in good intention for a bright future and peer pressure do not allow a young mind to think for itself and find out what it best likes to do. Young minds should be told that life does not necessarily begin and end with having to make off either to an engineering or a medical college. This sort of inbuilt pressure later gets to be the cause of depression and suicide among students. Failure to make it to these “dream” courses which in turn get you dream jobs cannot be the end of everything in life. There is a lot more.

Wide choice

The world of education is expanding by the day and there are many options available today for the youngsters to choose from. If you are inclined towards arts, well there is nothing to feel ashamed of. There are professional courses in reputed institutions that can shape your future for both earning well and making a name in the field you love. So too, are other pure sciences, designing (fashion, architecture, and others), humanities, nursing, teaching, languages, driving, ticketing, flying, marine, hotel management (hospitality sector) and a host of other technical training courses not to talk of Government civil services- all specialising in giving an integrated approach to the subject of choice.

So you see, the world does not revolve round just medical or engineering unless you really want to be an engineer or doctor. There are counsellors willing to offer advice. A boy or girl who is able to make up her/his mind about what she/he likes best and is good at and pursues it, they will be able to make best their lives and emerge as able citizens. Is it not true that today’s children are the future of their country?
