Celebrating Madras: An all-about-Chennai quiz.

hat is Pallavapuram known as now?”,

“Where does the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister hoist the National flag on Independence Day?”

These were some of the 25 preliminary quiz questions for the 40 Tamil medium students who were participating in The Madras Day Quiz 2007 held recently at P.S. Matriculation School. The Madras Day week culminated with the Tamil quiz held exclusively for Tamil medium students and this was followed by the English quiz for the public, the next day.

Namma Chennai

It was rather disheartening to note that only two schools made the effort to participate. Rani Meiyammai H.S.S. and Raja Muthaiah H.S.S. battled it out and two girls’ team and four boys’ team made it to the finals. The preliminary questions were basic and simple; but the final six rounds were toughies. All the questions were based on “Namma Chennai”. Did you know that the Pin code 600007 was exclusively for Fort St. George or that the cookery-show-famous Paravai Muniamma, was more famous as a folk song artiste or that it is the MTC bus No. 1 that plies between Tiruvanmiyur and Tiruvottiyur? The quiz master, Revathy, did an admirable job putting the children at ease in her firm yet friendly manner. It was an all boys victory when the Raja Muthiahites swept all three prizes. A. Saadulla and R. Kannan took first place and held aloft the rolling trophy. M. Prabhu and R. Raghupathi came second while T. Meghanathan and S.N.K. Vignesh Raj came third.

It was a different story the next day. The hall was packed and the excitement was tangible. The only stipulation made to the audience was that they had to be in teams of two. After a not-so-easy prelims, six teams made it to the dais to face shooters like, “What is the Chennai mayor’s email id?”

After six creative guesses, the answer was declared as, “ mayor@chennaicorporation.com”. “Why did Lord Marundeeshwarar face west when he originally faced east” was another that stumped the teams along with “What is the toll free number of Triplicane Ratna Café, famous for its idlis.” After much guessing the answer, which the audience diligently wrote down for future use, was 42599922.

At the end of 12 rounds, N. Rajaram and Sridhar Joshi walked away with the first prize.

After downing tumblers of iced nannari juice, the Madras Week celebrations concluded with much fun and merriment, celebrating the spirit that is essentially Chennai’s.
