Segundo blue is back

COMPILED BY R. KRITHIKA

Not all of California’s beach lovers may notice it but the greens among them sure do. The endangered El Segundo blue, a rare butterfly, is making a come back along Santa Monica Bay. The insects have been on the endangered list since 1976 due to the loss of the native habitat. Apart from caring for the butterflies in fenced-in reserves, scientists also began to work at restoring native vegetation. The butterflies, which have a wingspan of about an inch, prefer buckwhe at as the source of their nectar. This had, however, been edged out by an invasive non-native ice plant. Conservation efforts to restore buckwheat have paid off and now “they’re everywhere”, as Ann Dalkey, co-chairwoman of the Beach Bluffs Restoration Project, told Associated Press.
