Little Kidz
An interactive workshop on "wellness quotient (WQ)" between parents and specialists was organised at Little Kidz, a preschool, recently. "Not having any disease does not mean the child is healthy. Wellness of a child lies in the equilibrium of physical, mental and emotional well being. Health, happiness and high-performance of a child are the co-efficient of wellness quotient," said a specialist. Many more such issues regarding growing children were addr
essed and discussed. The parents of children studying in pre-primary classes actively participated in the workshop.
According to Sujatha Ramesh, principal of Little Kidz, "Wellness is a new concept which needs to be introduced to the parents. Wellness Quotient is an index of overall health of the child which includes mental, physical and emotional state". She said that the workshop was organised to provide a platform for parents to understand various co-efficient of WQ from counsellors, dieticians and family physicians. Deepak Shah, director of The Healing Touch, a holistic health setup in Bangalore, said “It is important to identify the internal and external factors affecting the child’s health. Sometimes parent’s suppressed anger can retard the child’s growth resulting in speech delay, stubbornness, emotional breakdown, crying, bed-wetting, thumb-sucking or aggressive behaviour.”
Dietician Girija Shankar said, "Parents need to monitor eating habits of children, and not to impose food. Food for children should be healthy, nutritious and regular. Let the child play so that the calories burn down and he/she feels hungry". Many parents expressed their concern and anxiety over parenting. Special educator Aparna Kalyanpur addressed issues on spending qualitative time with children and teaching them tools and skills that help them to read and write better.
