It was a week of hectic planting when different tree species were planted with school students participating wholeheartedly in the drive under the aegis of the Oisca International, South India Chapter, Kozhikode, in connection with the Environment Week that is organised as part of Oisca Day, every year. on were conducted as part of the week-long observance.
The Love Green Clubs in schools that were part of the Oisca Children’s Forestry Programme besides those schools that had drafted under the Herbal Garden Development Programme in Schools initiative too participated in the planting drive with enthusiasm.
More trees
Oisca had earlier sent circulars to the schools concerned on the importance of the environment week and how the occasion could be utilised effectively in greening the campuses, says Nalin, Oisca South India Chief Coordinator of Children’s Forestry Programme. T. Bhaskaran, Additional District Magistrate Kozhikode inaugurated the main programme at Markaz English Medium School at Karanthur. He had a few words of advice for students on the joy and satisfaction one got from being close to Nature by taking up activities such as tree planting. Health Minister, P.K. Sreemathi also participated in the tree planting drive at Mayyil Government Higher Secondary School by handing over herbal plants to children and distributing funds under the Herbal Garden Development Programme. The valedictory programme of the environment week observance was held at Government Juvenile Home at Marikunnu. The children of the orphanage had dug more than 1,500 pits with guidance of Oisca officials. Herbal tree species were planted in the pits. Later, inmates of the orphanage had lunch with Oisca officials besides student representatives of Youth Forum and Social Awareness and Leadership Training Course of Oisca. Government Vocational Higher Secondary School, Payyoli, Floreat International School, Valiyaparambu, Malappuram, Medical College School, Kovoor, Farook Higher Secondary School, Feroke, NGO Quarters Higher Secondary School, Marikunnu, and St . Vincent’s Girls Higher Secondary School were among schools where the planting drive was carried out, Mr. Nalin says.
