Film fare for children

RANEE KUMAR

There are many regional movies that are worth watching.

Beautiful moment: From the film Pather Panchali

Films have a lasting effect on the mind as there is a visual power about them. That is one of the reasons why movies still hold sway over us in spite of our exposure to so many other entertainments today. No wonder elders, teachers and parents alike insist on young ones not viewing certain type of films like horror films or movies with lot of violence in them or films glorifying anti-social causes and so on.

By the same token there are many films made with a purpose and these are the ones that ought to be seen. Just as good books are to be bought, read and digested so too good films are to be seen and imbibed.

Almost like an annual fare, the city hosts international children’s film festivals and foreign film festivals wherein scores of films are shown in select theatres across the city so as to be accessible to children staying in the vicinity. These movies from different countries picturing different cultures and societies are not only windows to the world but also reflect incidents and tales from which there will be so much to learn.

Other good stuff

Apart from children’s films at special festivals, our own country makes so many good movies on patriotism, science and technology, animals and birds but how many take interest to see them? We hear of good movies yet we are reluctant either to ask our parents to take us or to go with our friends.

Seeking out movies which are recommended by critics as good for viewing by children and families is a must see for every growing child. but also affords an outing which is so much more better than sitting indoors.

It need not be always foreign movies or English movies. There are regional films worth watching, having been made with a purpose.
