Prehistoric carvings
COMPILED BY R. KRITHIKA
Lake Michigan’s Grand Traverse Bay recently yielded a boulder with prehistoric carvings that resemble a mastodon with a spear in its side. The granite rock was found at about 40 feet by divers looking for shipwrecks. Underwater archaeologist Mark Holley of Grand Traverse Bay Underwater Preserve Council told AP, “When you see it in the water, you’re tempted to say this is absolutely real. But that’s what we need the experts to come
in and verify.” The ancient mastodon, which was similar to the elephant, once roamed over parts of North America. But specialists will not be drawn. They want to see more evidence that this is indeed an ancient petroglyph. Daniel Fisher, curator of the University of Michigan Museum of Paleontology, in a phone interview to AP said, “The difficulty I saw was that the features of what’s interpreted as an engraving were so subtle, and they’re not the only thing on
the boulder.”
