Take a train

As air travel is hit by security alarms, rail travel is seeing boom time especially in Europe. There is also the green factor since the carbon dioxide impact of flights is between four and 10 times that of rail on shorter journeys. Against this background, Eurostar’s new Paris-London record of around two hours is significant. On September 4, the inaugural run on the high speed track clocked two hours, three minutes and 39 seconds as against the usual two hours and 35 minutes. On the French side the trains hit 186 mph but on the British side they have to go alongside other commuter services. “The High Speed 1 timetable will for the first time enable U.K. business travellers to reach the centre of Paris and Brussels before 9 a.m., ready for a full day’s work,” Eurostar Chief Executive Richard Brown told Reuters.
