The lion dance: At the competition.

A lion and dragon dance, locally known as Barongsai, was part of the national festival celebrated recently at Poedarwanto, in Sragen District, Central Java. The national festival was aimed at strengthening the country’s unity and celebrating the country’s Independence Day on August 17. The International Lion Dance competition saw the participation of teams from Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and Taiwan. Barongsai dance is originally from China. About four perce nt of Indonesia’s 225-million population are Chinese Indonesians.
