Courting success

MANISHA GARG

Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic being his inspiration, Rahul is now being groomed for international courts.

Rising star: Rahul

Studying in Std. VII, and barely 11 years old, Rahul Somani is a tennis champion.

He was the semi-finalist in the singles of the recently held “Indus School All India Rankings Tennis Championship” Under-12 Category and was runner-up in the doubles of the same Championship. In January this year, Rahul was the winner at t he Under -12 Eighth Annual Junior Open Tennis Tournament.

Though he started playing the game in 2005, the very next year he reached the finals of the District level tournament of Under-10. A modest Rahul says, "It is because of my family and my coach K. Babji’s support that I have come up.”

Balance too

Though Rahul has to travel quite a bit to play the game at State and National levels, he seems to have struck a fine balance between sport and academics.

“In spite of practising the game daily for two-three hours, he has always been among the top five students in his class,” says his proud father.
