Books that inspire

NIMI KURIAN

If you want to know more about India’s saints and sages, scientists and technologist then these are for you.

Two books that inspire – one on the lives of saints and sages and the other about scientists and technologists. Both the books, by M.L. Ahuja, are about people who made a difference to the lives of people living in India. While some ideologies and beliefs touched the hearts of many outside India, the other talks of science and development and how these people have impacted people the world over.

Long list

The first book Eminent Indians: Saints and Sages begins with the life of Buddha briefly talking about his sermons and the value of the Middle Path. Followed by Mahavira, the 24th Tirthankara of the Jainas and Adi Sankara, whose Advaita philosophy was a major contribution to the development of philosophical thought. The book goes on to cover Sant Kabir, Guru Nanak, Ramana Maharishi, Mother Teresa and more. The other book Eminent Indians: Scientists and Technologists covers a gamut of 10 people beginning with Vikram Sarabhai, credited with charting India’s space programme. Followed by Sushrata and Aryabhatta. Also finding place are Jagadish Chandra Bose, Homi Jehangir Bhabha and Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar, and more.

Ahuja has managed to describe the lives of these prominent people in a very simple style. He tells the life stories interestingly, adding a three dimensional effect to otherwise known information.

EMINENT INDIANS: SAINTS AND SAGES; EMINENT INDIANS: SCIENTISTS AND TECHNOLOGISTS by M.L. Ahuja, Rupa and Co.,
