Maldives Post issued a stamp in commemoration of the 250th birth anniversary of Thomas Gainsborough (1727-1788), a British painter, featuring a portrait painted by him.

Gainsborough who was from a humble background and painted portraits of the richest and the most fashionable people of his time. His well-known paintings were Mrs. Siddons and The Blue Boy. The latter was sold in 1921 for œ 1,50,000 by the Duke of Westminster.
