Biggest insect
COMPLIED BY R.KRITHIKA
What would you do if faced with a bug that you couldn’t crush or step on? Simon Braddy, a palaeontologist at the University of Bristol, recently found the remains of an ancient sea scorpion, which makes it the biggest ever insect. A fossilised claw found in rocks, about 390 million years old, suggests that the scorpion was about eight feet long. Braddy told AP that while scientists had found fossils of “monster millipedes, super-sized scorpions, colossal cockroaches, and jumbo dragonflies… we never realised until now just how big some of these ancient creepy-crawlies were.” The fossil was found in Germany in an area that was probably an ancient swamp. According to Prof. Jeorg W. Schneider, palaeontologist at Freiberg Mining Academy, Germany, the find gives valuable new information about “the last of the giant scorpions”.
