Prehistoric trading networks

Ancient burial sites in Southeast Asia have shed light on prehistoric trading networks. Analysis of jade jewellery found from sites across Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia and the Philippines reveal that most of the items originate from one site in Taiwan. This shows that there was a huge trade network that travelled across 3000 km in the South China Sea area. Researchers believe that jade was exported as raw material from Taiwan and crafted into various items at its destination since they have found only one earring in Taiwan and evidences of workshops in Vietnam and Thailand. The discovery has spotlighted the seafaring capabilities of Southeast Asian cultures.
