It is something that avid quizzers wait for the whole year long. Not for nothing too. After all The Hindu Young World Quiz is among India’s largest quizzing events. This event showcases quizzing in all its characteristic glory and the final held at Chennai was no less.

On a Monday, instead of the usual maths and history lessons students had a bit of everything in a day devoted to quizzing. The morning saw the Chennai regional rounds getting over with P.S.B.B., T. Nagar, romping home to victory. But they didn’t quite make it in the semi finals.

Close fight

It would have been easy to imagine empty halls and a half hearted audience. But this was Chennai and since the regional winners from other centres were present, the audience stayed to cheer them on. After all quizzing isn’t just about winning!

The stage was a glorious sight. Little Rock, Mangalore, Akhilendeswarui Vidyalaya, Tiruchi, Little Flower Hyderabad, St. Patrick’s, Puducherry, De Paul’s, Vishakhapatnam and Bhavan’s Vidya Mandir, Kochi assembled and the ultimate battle was soon under way.

The Puducherry team was special. They were the first winners of the inaugurate round of this year’s quiz and the only all girls team to add variety to the stage.

The Vizag Steel City Headlines round was the first and probably the most interesting. Participants were given a dateline and they would have to guess the news line. The first one on screen was “August 16, 1947”. The State Bank of Travancore Crosswords saw St Patrick’s and De Paul in a neck-to-neck race.

It was from then on that De Paul started demolishing competition to be the ultimate quizzing champs. They will wear the crown till next year, till the nest edition of India’s most exciting middle school quizzing championship.

The title sponsor was Amity University. Associate sponsors Tara Talcum Powder and Lotte Booproo. The national sponsors were Cycle Brand Agarbattis, Encyclopaedia Britannica, Reynolds, Extramarks.com, Penguin Books, Malaysia Tourism, State Bank of Travancore and Vizag Steel Plant. The official drink was Dabur Real Fruit Juice.

The event was managed by Quizwalahs.
