Ever wanted to step into the kitchen and step out with delicious looking delicacies but “something” had stopped you? Here’s book that would make you saunter in with confidence and try out recipes that would make even mama go green with envy. Kids Kitchen by Laurence and Gilles Laurendon is a treasure trove not only because of the variety of recipes but also of the little snippets like “The chef says,” and “Tasty Tips
8221; that are tucked at the bottom of the pages that makes this book extra special.
Beginning with the golden rules on becoming a fine chef, the authors give the do’s and don’ts of kitchen management. Helpful are the hints that are “commonsensical” like one teaspoon is equal to five grams of sugar and one tablespoon measures 15 grams of sugar. The pictures of kitchen equipment are basic and are a great guide for a child to potter around in the kitchen and familiarise oneself with the pots, pans and other paraphernalia. “The Chef’s secrets” and “Tips for cooking and baking” are a delight as they give fine tips for a better bake.
Entrées, the main course, desserts, festive delights and food from faraway lands, are the topics under which the recipes are classified. The presentation of a dish is also highlighted, for example, pumpkin soup can be served in huge bowl, carved out of a pumpkin itself.
The format of the recipe is easy to follow. First the preparation time is given, followed by the cooking time, utensils to be used and the ingredients. The recipe on the facing page is given step by step which makes for an uncomplicated process of cooking. Simple language and comic illustrations by Lionel Koechlin give a special flavour to this book.
