Benefits of being a vegan

The seminar on humane education was an eye-opener of sorts.

Students were taught the advantages of vegetarianism and sensitised to the need for preventing cruelty towards animals. It was at a day-long seminar on humane education, organised jointly by the Karuna International Thanjavur Kendra and the Karuna Club of Sri Venkateswara Matric H.S. School, Thanjavur, recently.

Inaugurating the workshop in which 50 students from a dozen schools participated, M.C. Appandai Raj, Educational Officer, Karuna International, Chennai, narrated the objectives of starting Karuna Clubs in schools and colleges. He spoke about the ways in which cruelties are inflicted on animals and advised children not to use leather, silk, bark (silver foil wrapped on sweets) and cosmetics made out of animal parts. He also described the pain that animals are forced to undergo for tail docking, jallikattu, bull fighting, etc.

Prevention better

P. Gurunathan, Professor, Thanjavur Medical College, advised students to opt for a vegetarian diet in order to avoid constipation, cancer and cardio-vascular diseases.

T. Ilanchezian, forest guard, enlightened students on animal protection rights.

Distributing certificates to the participants, S.P. Balasubramanian, correspondent of the school, and the Thanjavur Kendra president of Karuna International, said students should imbibe these values.

Ram Manohar, District Environment Awareness coordinator, spoke about environmental protection, elaborating on pollution caused by the destruction of forests and killing of animals. He emphasised that students have a major role in protecting the environment. A brain storming session and a LCD show were also organised.
