Remnants: Of the Quedagh Merchant.
Back in the 17th century, Captain William Kidd looted a merchant ship, the Quedagh Merchant, of its goods before it was set on fire and sunk. Now, in the 21st century, a research team from Indiana University has found what is believed to be the wreck of the ship off the coast of the Dominican Republic. John Foster, California’s state underwater archaeologist who is part of the research team, was quoted on LiveScience.com as saying that the find would throw light on p
iracy in the Caribbean. Though he was convicted for piracy and murder and later hanged, there is difference over whether Kidd was a pirate or privateer or a sailor who was paid by the government to fight the enemy. According to Geoffrey Conrad, an anthropologist with Indiana University, the location, the cannons and anchors match the historical records of the Quedagh Merchant.
“All the evidence that we find underwater is consistent with what we know from historical documentation, which is extensive,” Conrad told LiveScience.com. “Through rigorous archaeological investigations, we will conclusively prove that this is the Capt. Kidd shipwreck.”
