‘Weighty’ issue

SESHADHRI SUBRAMANIAN,

A cub reporter talks of the problems of having to carry a heavy school bag.

Burdensome: Far too heavy.

My mother tells me that when she was in school, she never had to carry so many books nor such a heavy bag. Oh! how I wish I was studying in those days. I would never have had to carry so many Mathematics note books apart from the one text book. From Std. I to Std. XII all students have to carry this heavy bag. Everyday we carry at least five kilograms, so naturally, the spinal chord is being stressed.

It is the same Science and the same Mathematics that we have to study today as was taught to the generation. So then, why is it that we should carry so many books? Even if we don’t carry one small notebook, the teachers start scolding us. But we can blame neither the teachers nor the students. It is the educational system that has changed. Why has this degeneration occurred? Why don’t the educationists, MLAs or MLCs of the Tamil Nadu Government tackle this problem? Or why don’t the MPs of both the Rajya Sabha and the Lok Sabha come together and debate this issue in the Parliament so that we can arrive at a solution that is acceptable to both the teachers and the students.

If a solution can be found, then the children of today who are the future of the country can be spared of orthopedic problems, thus making it a healthy generation.
