A complete school newspaper

SANGEETH KURIAN

It has science, sports and tidbits from their lives at school.

The students of Le’cole Chempaka have come up with ‘The Patronus,’ a tabloid that chronicles the activities of the school. The 11 page journal is complete with local news, sports, exclusive interviews, editorial and even advertisements on Pizza corner and Cyber cafes.

The tabloid begins with a lead story on the school’s prize wining performance at the Young World Quiz, this year. The accident of the school gardener Aneesh also finds a place in the tabloid. The editorial page is a compilation of views from the students on The Hindu Newspaper in Education programme.

The sports page led with India’s victory against Pakistan at the Indian Oil cup. The report criticises Pakistan cricket coach Geoff Lawson for sending Shahid Afridi to bat up the order.

More news

The tabloid has sections devoted to science and technology quiz apart from a “do it yourself’ column which shows how to make a thermometer using a drinking straw (white), clay, food colour, water and a bottle. First make a hole on the cap of the bottle, then pour water and add some food colour. Close the bottle with the cap and insert the straw through the hole.

Now seal the cap and straw airtight with clay. Suck some water through the straw and mark the level of water. The mark on the straw will be the room temperature. Keep it inside the refrigerator; the water mark will go down.

In summer the mark will rise up. If the ’thermometer experiment’ does not interest you, here is one for the more adventurous. Take a test tube and mix two spoons of potassium permanganate and four spoons of glycerine and also some bits of paper and see what happens!
