Students of Government schools in Pudukottai district have brought laurels to the district by entering the South India-level competition in the Jawaharlal Nehru National Science Exhibition recently. The State-level competition for the selection of the exhibits was held in Karur in which students from 200 high and higher secondary schools had exhibited their models, numbering a little over 600.
The exhibits on “environmental protection” prepared by students of Government High School in Vadavaalam, an interior village in Pudukottai district, and the one on using the principle of mobile phone to switch off the main board of power supply were selected for the South-India level competition to be held in Tiruchi from January 21 to 25.
Clean village
The exhibit on environmental protection got ready by K. Siva and P. Chitravelu of Government High School in Vadavaalam depicted the “clean village” concept. The thrust of the exhibit was on personal and public hygiene through the use of toilets, protected drinking water supply, ecological balance by setting up parks and proper upkeep of domestic and public wells in rural areas.
“Students used simple and low-cost materials to drive home the message of health and hygiene,” says headmaster R. Paramasivam and Science teacher A. Rajendran, who guided the students in preparing the model.
The fact that the principle of the mobile phone has multi-uses was proved by a model prepared by V. Sudarsan and C. Sabarivasan, both of Government Higher Secondary School in Thirgokarnam near Pudukottati.
A mobile phone is attached to the “main board”, the point of origin for power supply for a domestic or commercial establishment. “It is quite common that, while leaving for outstation or closing down a shop, one forgets to switch off all the electrical appliances,” says science teacher Babu, who guided the students. A call to the mobile number attached to the main board will instantly switch off the supply to the main, he explains.
The Chief Educational Officer of Pudukottai district, S. Chellam, appreciated the efforts made by the students in preparing the exhibits. It is no mean achievement that the students of a single district emerge victorious by qualifying for the South-India level competition, she observed.
In fact, a model on preparation of the vermin-compost by the students of the Government Higher Secondary School in Viralimalai village, also in Pudukottai district, though not qualified to enter the South-India level contest, bagged a consolation prize.
In Tiruchi, the exhibits selected from Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Orissa will vie for selection to the national-level contest, according to Ms. Chellam.
