Youth power

RAJESWARI NAMAGIRI

January 12 is National Youth Day, motivating youth to be tomorrow’s leaders.

For change: Calling tomorrow’s leaders:

January 12 is National Youth Day. When Swami Vivekananda said, “…Fifty centuries are looking on you, the future of India depends on you. Work on…” He was calling the youth.

Swami Vivekananda, who through his writings inspired youth to be the builders of future while also upholding ancient values, was born on January 12, 1863. To commemorate this day, in India this day is celebrated as National Youth Day. (In our country, the age group for categorising youth is 13-35 years).

The central idea of Youth Day is to inspire and motivate youth to uphold and strengthen the concept of national integration, spirit of communal harmony, brotherhood, courage and adventure. Young people are tomorrow’s professionals, teachers, engineers, doctors, political leaders and so on, which gives them collectively the greatest influence on the future of the earth.

Action!

From individual action to collective action, youth can play a leading role in issues relating to the environment. Kavitha, a student of Vivekanandha H.S.S. in Puducherry and a member of the National Green Corps (NGC), has created awareness in the area on the ozone-depleting freons found in refrigerators. She discourages people from using sprays which contain Chlorofluorocarbons (CFC), and polythene bags.

Almost half of the current global population of six billion comprised young people under the age of 25 (United Nations 2005). Youth through their lifestyles can influence the consumption and production of goods and services! The youth of the country and world hold an immense promise for a sustainable future.
