Lyuba’s secret

unearthed: The gray-and-brown carcass.
She may have died 37,500 years ago but Lyuba is now helping scientists figure out why Siberian mammoths became extinct and incidentally is also giving them insights into what is one of the major problems the modern world faces — climate change. Lyuba is the six-month-old mammoth whose frozen carcass was discovered last. May by a reindeer herder in north Siberia. These ancient animals lived some 4.8 million years ago till about 4,000 years ago and researchers have bee
n arguing over the reason for their extinction - either climate change or hunting by man. Scientists now fear that Lyuba’s body may have come to light due to the melting of the permafrost, which means that global warming is accelerating. Lyuba’s discovery may actually be a warning sign to mankind.
