SURESH KUMAR

The Gita goes beyond religion.

An inter school ‘Bhagawad Gita Chanting Competition’ for the students was held at Bhavan’s Varuna Vidyalaya, Thrikkakara recently. It was conducted under the auspices of ‘Sikshan Bharathi’, the education wing of the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan. 600-odd students from 13 schools in Kerala participated.

The competition was held under three categories. Category I had students from standard II-III. Category II had students from standard IV-VI and category III had students from standard VII-IX. Each category consisted of six students. Bhavans News Print Nagar School, Velloor, Kottayam, won the overall championship. Bhavans Adarsha Vidyalaya, Akkanad came second and Bhavan’s Vidya Bhavan, Poochatti, Thrissur bagged the third prize. The recitation, sound, pronunciation and keeping to the time counted for the award.

Among the 18 chapters of the ‘Gita’, the second chapter was given for chanting. It is about the importance of ‘Karma’ (duty) in our life. ‘Your right is to work without an eye to the fruit of your labours. Lord Krishna was trying to motivate Arjuna to fight the war.

Krishna inspires Arjuna to expand his narrow concept of selfhood, so that he could see his real nature and thus armed with knowledge perform his duties in the best possible manner. The Gita tells us not to avoid a problem but to confront it boldly.

‘Unlike other competitions, it was a novel experience. “The Gita inculcates values and culture in every human being,” said Achuth, a member of the winning squad. The competition was inaugurated by Mr. K. R. Nambiar, an expert on Gita chanting.

The Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan Registrar, E. Ramankutty, was present.
