North-East cultural exchange prorgamme
The invocation song in Assamese celebrating religious and cultural amity by the participants set the tempo for the 10 day North-East cultural exchange prorgamme organised by the Nehru Yuva Kendra Sanathan (NYKS) in Thiruvananthapuram recently.
For the team of 100 youngsters in the age group of 13 to 35 years from the seven North-Eastern States, visiting the State was a novel experience. Like Manju Konsam, a science student from the Morch College in Manipur, most of them were excited on arrival to have a glimpse of the sea for the first time in their lives. “It was really a wonderful experience. We spent nearly two hours there,” said Konsam, about his visit to the beach near Veli.
For his friends, Sunita Devi, N. Nabakumar Singh, M. Tingbul and Kikim, too the visit turned out to be a memorable experience. “We have seen the sea only in movies,” said Kikim, a student of class XI. It was also the first time most of the team members had travelled by train. “We thoroughly enjoyed the trip,” said Kikim.
“The people of Kerala are very friendly and welcoming. But we found communication a bit of a problem as many of them could not speak Hindi,” he said. As a part of the exchange programme, the group, divided into batches of 10 members each, travelled the length and breadth of the State experiencing and imbibing its cultural heritage and tradition.
