Mahatma on a British stamp

Mahatma Gandhi is the first foreigner to be featured on a stamp issued by the British Post Office. The 1s 6p issued to commemorate the birth centenary of the Mahatma shows a bust of a cheerful Gandhiji with the national flag in the background and the the writing “Gandhi Centenary Year 1969”.

The head of the English queen in silhouette is seen on the upper right hand corner to indicate the country of isue. Indian artist Biman Mullick designed the stamp.
