Telescope tales: With the children
In a land full of mythology, people attribute mythological reasons to every single celestial happening, be it an eclipse or constellation of stars. In an attempt to break the wrong notions, to change people’s mindset and feed young minds with proper understanding of science, a lecture on “Our Universe” was organised by the Meenakshi Mission Hospital and Research Centre for a group of school students here recently.
S. Natarajan from Nehru Planetarium, Mumbai, delivered the lecture with impressive support material. He dispelled myths attached to astrology and various other misconceptions regarding eclipses.
Spread stars
Through his five inch Newtonian reflector telescope, he showed the night sky. Besides, the participants could see planets Mars, Saturn, moon craters and clusters.
He also explained to students how to identify various star constellations. Mr. Natarajan has been popularising astronomy for the last 15 years in various schools and colleges all over the country. He has conducted more than 1000 such shows.
It has been a fruitful session for more than 100 students from various schools in the city. For, they had first hand information about the galaxy.
