Designing grace

SANA SYED

Fusing tradition with the trendy seems to be her brand.

Style speaks: Safiya

Safiya Sharmeen, Std. XI student of Chirec Public School, is on her way to establishing her newly launched brand “Missy “n” Togga”. “Missy suggests a young woman while “toga” is for the one-piece cloak worn by people in ancient Rome. Her brand stands for “reflecting the true grace of a woman”. While her mother Afshan has been in this trade for long, Safiya wishes to internationalise her designs and contribute to the cre ativity she inherits from her. To craft unique designs is in her blood and she wishes to bring back the days of ghararas, lehengas and other ethnic wear creations by blending them with trendy designs and happening accessories.

These days she is busy equipping herself with the practical nuances of fashion designing. She has chosen designing as an optional paper at school which has official certification from NIFT. Among the Indian designers she admires Manish Malhotra and feels that style statement is determined by the success with which one is able to carry a particular attire.

Expressions

There is something more to this versatile teenager. The teen loves classical dance.

Bharatanatyam to be precise, writes poems and possesses an ardent desire to become a journalist.

Under her delicate features is the sturdy energy of an athlete which has won her a few medals.

But when it comes to passion she is heart and soul for classical dance. “Dance is the most appealing way of expressing one’s feeling,” remarks Safiya.
