For a closer walk with nature

N. RAMJEE

Sitting in a classroom and learning from a textbook hardly compares with the first hand information you can get by relating with nature.

An experience: To learn, understand and love.

Can you remember the earthy, rich smell of soil, the call of a cuckoo, the taste of badam, or the beauty of a neem tree? If your answer is in the affirmative, you are fortunate. Frequent positive and direct experiences in the outdoors, are essential in developing a positive attitude towards the environment and instil a love for nature.

It’s a well known tenet that being outdoors promotes a feeling of well-being. It has also been proved that exploration of nature increases confidence, comfort level, and even coordination. The pleasure of watching a pond-strider skate with ease over a water puddle, a sparrow build her nest, the exquisite blossoms of a rain tree… are matchless.

Some programmes

Unfortunately today children rarely get a chance to have a true connection with nature. The classroom offers few opportunities to interact with the environment and to explore the rich and dynamic natural world. Few schools provide opportunities to go on a “nature hike”.

The Centre for Environment Education, has programmes for both students and teachers to interact with nature. “Searching the Sere Sylvan” was a programme for nature hikes, and was conducted at the Indira Gandhi National Park (IGNP), Anamalai Hills in the Western Ghats. Numerous trails follow meandering streams through a variety of habitats and terrain. Another programme “Leaf Collecting trail” gave children the opportunity to experience nature first hand.

On request the CEE gives presentations in school.
